Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Quick summary:

1) Size is about the same as other 1000mg capsules, please see picture I uploaded.

2) Amount of EPA/DHA is less than in regular fish oil capsules because the EPA/DHA is of the phospholipid bound type which are easier to absorb. The amounts are about the same as found in krill oil capsules.

----------------------------------------------

I've been taking omega-3 supplements for about 5 years and reviewing them on Amazon for about 3. I've done maybe a dozen omega-3 reviews. This is a little different from your run of the mill omega-3. First, the omega-3 is phospholipid (PL) bound, which makes it easier to absorb.

Most of the PL O3 that you find is from krill oil. In fact, when I first started taking krill oil 2 years ago, the only supplements I was aware of that contained PL O3 was krill oil. This year, when researching PL O3, I've found PL omega-3 in supplements that are made from fish heads, fish roe or fish meal.

I make it a point to ask manufacturers where their product is made and Jarrow has told me that the Phoshomega raw material comes from Norway and their manufacturing facility is located in Southern California.

Jarrow Phosphomega-3 is made from fish meal, specifically sandeel. No matter what fish you get it from, ultimately the omega-3 comes from algae or plankton since fish can't make it themselves. I wrote Jarrow for more info and they gave me this reference link:

Size: The size of each gel is 1000mg or 1g. Almost all fish oil capsules are 1000mg and this is the same size as any of the other ones. I've uploaded a picture comparison of 4 different capsules showing their similarity in sizes.

Taste: I have not noticed any fish oil taste. And there shouldn't be any fish oil taste since this isn't made from fish oil but from fish meal.

Quantities: The label lists per one 1000mg capsule:

Total phospholipids =400 mg

Total O-3 as 223mg. EPA=84mg, DHA=111mg

Astaxanthin = 100mcg (microgram)

This is actually very similar to krill oil nutritional data. For some reason phospholipid omega-3 is supplemented in lesser quantities than regular omega-3. So don't compare the these EPA/DHA quantities to that in fish oil, compare it the quantities in krill oil and you'll find it very similar.

Value: For price comparison purposes, look at the total amount of DHA/EPA. This bottle contains 195mg EPA/DHA x 30 capsules = 5.85g DHA/EPA. Divide the current price by 5.85 and you will get the price of DHA/EPA per gram but remember this is the phospholipid bound kind.

Summary: This is a better type of omega-3, made from sandeel. My recommendation is to take different types of omega-3. Currently I take in rotation:

cod liver oil (natural O3)

fish oil capsules (refined O3)

sandeel (this one), (phospholipid O3)

This way, I'm getting my omega-3 from several different sources to reduce my chances of getting toxicity from a single source.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have loved most of the Jarrow's products I have tried. I find them to be consistent and high quality. I take several supplements to help with health issues and the side effects of medication. I take omegas to help with inflammation. I am always interested in maximizing the bio availability of the supplements I take so this looked like a good choice for me.

The pills are large which is normal for omegas. I didn't have a problem taking the capsule though. But about 45 minutes later, things went south. I didn't just have fishy burps. I felt like I was being suffocated by a cod. This product obviously breaks down as advertised, which is great. My reflux is not the products fault. Then I tried freezing the pills and taking one. I woke up later that night smelling/tasting fish. My cat quite enjoyed it but I was less excited.

This is obviously a good product (breaks down to be available) but not good for me.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I am a big fan of Jarrow products and trust that they work as they should. Jarrow FORMULAS Phosphomega-3 Softgels is the type of product that is difficult to determine the benefits. I use it because I'm a middle age male with a family history of heart disease. I take prescribed meds and other supplements to help me live longer. I can't tell you that this particular product is giving me any noticeable benefits. I can say that I trust Jarrow and use several of their products. I have used this for about three months and my recent blood work was unchanged since the last testing, about six months ago. Therefore it is not counteracting my other supplements and meds. I will have to evaluate this product on my faith of Jarrow.

I do know that the "omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, of which 40 percent are supplied naturally bound to phospholipids for improved bioavailability" is unlike most omega 3 supplements because it does dissolve and breakdown faster. It is made of fish and fish oil has been documented and proven to help with various ailments as well as a preventative supplement. It is proven to help with promoting a healthy "cardiovascular function, support healthy brain and immune function, and boost metabolic health*

I recommend this if your physician suggests the need for a fish oil product.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I've never taken supplements before except for occasional multi-vitamins, but I'm aware of the research that suggests there may be benefits* to adding more highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) to a diet, especially the long chain Omega-3 (most of us already get more than enough Omega-6) and in particular the EPA and DHA fatty acids. I'd prefer to just add more fresh fish to my meals each week, but since it doesn't always work out that way I thought I'd try some of the Jarrow products.

The PhosphOmega softgel is dark brown and nearly an inch long. There's a definite odor from the bottle, although it smells more like aquarium flake food than "fishy" to me, but it's not exactly unpleasant. Each 1000mg softgel contains only 84mg of EPA + 111mg of DHA which = 195mg (19.5%) of the total, but the label isn't clear what the other 805mg (80.5%) is. That sounds low although the advertising claims it is easier for the body to absorb. The source is listed as "fish (sandeel)"** and the "other ingredients" are "sunflower lecithen and rosmarinic acid." Medical recommendations I found online cautioned against _supplementing_ more than 2g/day (apparently too much can cause internal bleeding in rare cases) so the 1-2 softgels a day recommended on the bottle is well under that limit. Other reviewers of similar products have mentioned "fish burps" when taking fish oil supplements, and although I had no idea what that was I found out after taking just one. It helps to take them before eating but doesn't completely make it go away, and no amount of drinking water fixes the problem, which I found very unpleasant.

*There is a lot of information regarding the "benefits" of supplementing Omega-3 and EPA and DHA but it isn't without controversy and much of it sounds over-hyped. We all have a natural tendency to simply glom onto the information that supports what we want to believe (confirmation bias) but anyone taking or considering taking supplements would be wise to do a little research and not simply ignore contrary findings.

**Sandeel refers to several species of small sand-dwelling fish that are relatively low in the ocean food chain. They are the primary food for many sea birds and a significant food for higher level predators such as cod, haddock, and mackerel as well as dolphins, porpoises, and seals. Sandeel is mainly used as a feed source for farmed fish such as salmon and as supplements like this one. Overfishing of sandeel is a growing concern.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program It's been 29 days since I started taking these capsules, and I haven't noticed any benefits, though it's always a good thing to take fish oil. All I can really say is that these don't leave any weird tastes in my mouth afterwards, they're easy to swallow (though they are on the big side), and the bottle is easy to open. And the price isn't too bad either.

'not a fan of the 10% cholesterol per pill, but it's to be expected for fish oil. Give them a shot.
