A couple of years ago my optometrist advised that I take fish oil capsules on a daily basis to help ward off macular degeneration. For those who don't know, this is a condition that occurs when the macula (the area at the back of the retina that produces the sharpest vision) weakens over time.

There are many other benefits to fish oil, including being useful in the treatment of a number of forms of depression, and many physicians recommend it for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. But the problem for many is that they find the capsules to be intolerable for one reason: fish oil burps.

The Coromega Omega-3 Fish Oil, Lemon Lime seems to eliminate that problem for most. It's packaged in convenient daily dose pudding-like squeeze packets. I personally like the taste, but if one doesn't, they can easily be mixed with blended drinks or added to yogurt. These Coromega products contain top quality fish oil from deep, cold-water fish, which is said to be the best kind.

It should also be noted that low levels of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) have been connected to various forms of depression, ADD (attention deficit disorder) and Alzheimer's disease. Various studies have revealed that brains of Alzheimer's patients have 30 percent less DHA than brains of comparably aged people who do not have the disease.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness among older adults in the US, and is said to affect over 7 million individuals older than 40 years. The frequency of AMD is likely to increase as the population ages. There is currently no known way to prevent the condition, but research has begun to identify potentially modifiable risk factors and nutrient-based treatments. More info on this can be found here:

Archives of Ophthalmology, Vol. 124 No. 7, July 2006In any case, if your health care practitioner has suggested fish oil as a treatment, this product is a tasty alternative to the capsules. It can also be found in other flavors, such as Coromega Omega-3 Supplement, Orange Flavor, Squeeze Packets, 90-Count Box and Coromega Omega-3 Supplement, Orange Flavor with a Hint of Chocolate, 90 packets.

If you wish to read up a bit on the benefits of the fish oil supplements, you can try DHA: The Essential Omega-3 Fatty Acid by Remi Cooper, who explains it clearly in a 32-page booklet.

There are "good" and "bad" fats, and Omega-3 fatty acids are considered one of the "good" fats important for cellular, heart and metabolic health, along with being good for the eyes. DHA is one of those fatty acids that help maintain a healthy heart and circulatory system, along with maintaining triglyceride levels already within a normal range.

So yes, for many of us there are healthy and tasty alternatives to the fish oil capsules... without the fish oil burps.

I can't say enough good about the Coromega supplements! They taste great, leave no fishy aftertaste or burps, are packable and are even desireable to my toddler! WOW. Our family prefers the original orange (which has a cremsicle taste) -but I also like the lemon-lime flavor for a change. The lemon-lime is a little tart but I like that. Overall, if you are new to coromega or trying to get your family to take it, I would start with the Orange (not the choc orange) because it is the most universally liked flavor.

My 9 year old son and I like the orange Coromega omega 3 packets (my 7 year old daughter not so much), so we were hopeful the lemon lime would be good. These products have great omega 3, DHA and EPA content, but this lemon lime flavor...yuck! We're pretty disappointed. We will reorder the orange, and probably try the tropical flavor, but in the meantime I'll have to choke these down myself.

Update: 9/19/2012 We've been taking these lime omega packets for about 2 weeks now, and I maybe we just got used to it, but the taste isn't as bad as we first thought. Still not as good as the orange, but I'll raise my rating from 2 stars to 3.

I am not able to swallow the large size fish oil pills and have been taking the chewables but they contain very little fish oil. These packets have a good amount of fish oil and are easy to take. Taste is a little tart but they are so contrated that your're really taking a very little amount. No after burping. Convenient.

My whole family enjoys this supplement in both orange and lemon-lime flavors. It tastes pretty good. Easy does it though. If ya try to suck down the whole packet all at once the flavor is a bit overwhelming and not as tasty. So slow down and enjoy it. It was funny the first time the kids used it. They tasted just a lil bit, really liked it then tried to gulp the rest down and gagged, lol. They quickly decided it was good but lick it a little at a time because all at once wasn't as good ;-)
