On it's own, Clary Sage has a rather fresh, green scent. When mixed with other essential oils it mellows and becomes less prominent. It reminds me of freshly pressed grass scented with bark. It is an interesting and complex essential oil, but seems best when balanced with other oils.
There are higher floral notes, but they are difficult to describe. A few drops of this in the bath with numerous other elements create some beautiful scents. This is the uplifting element and combines well with Rose and Ylang Ylang.
This is strong enough that when applied to my wrists it will overpower Rose, Ylang Ylang and Egyptian Musk. So, use sparingly for the best results.
