May 2013 Update:
I've been taken these soft gels off and on for a couple years now. Every time I get done being sick, I will have a stuffy nose for months. These soft gels somehow magically clears up my nose and I can breathe again! I'm guessing it works like an natural anti inflammatory medicine. I take them more during the winter for the vitamin D. I also take them before final exams to boost my brain or protect my immune system during the flu season. If you check out the Carlson website, they make different bottles with very different vitamin amounts so look at the labels carefully before purchase.
Here's the official site:
Original review:
Here are the supplement Facts per 1 soft gel for Cod Liver Oil "Lightly Lemon" and the Cod Liver Oil with "Low Vitamin A":
Vitamin A: 150 IU (3% Daily Value)
Vitamin D: 80 IU (20% Daily Value)
Vitamin E: 2 IU (7% Daily Value)
Omega-3: 230mg
EPA: 85mg
DHA: 100mg
If you buy the Carlson Cod Liver Oil "Super 1000mg", be aware that it has high contents of Vitamins A, D, and E which can be toxic if you take too much:
Vitamin A: 2000 IU (40% Daily Value)
Vitamin D: 250 IU (63% Daily Value)
Vitamin E: 10 IU (33% Daily Value)
Omega-3: 240mg
EPA: 90mg
DHA: 120mg
"Lightly Lemon" offsets the fishy taste if you don't like regular fish oil. This has low Vitamin A and it gives you about the same amount of Omega-3 compared to Super 1000mg. If you buy the "Super 1000mg" which Carlson recommends to take 5 soft gels per day, that means you will have 200% Vitamin A which can be dangerous for your health.
Also on the bottom of the bottle says best used by 2015, I bought this in 2011, so expiration is about 4 to 5 years.

I got this because of the Carlson name (Carlson Labs has been around for a long time), the price and safety (tested for toxins). It's often not easy to tell which is cheaper since different brands have different amounts of omega-3's per gel, so what I did was just calculate the cost per mg of omega-3 by dividing the price by the total mgs (number of servings multiplied by the omega-3 per serving). That way, you figure out which has the best value per mg. It didn't really matter to me what the monthly cost or monthly dosage cost was because there really isn't an absolute daily allowance (the recommended one is 1000 mgs per day) and I figure it's more normal/natural to have a varying amount daily anyway, but that's just me.
When shopping only for price, look for something which is on sale, buy enough stuff to get free shipping, and usually the larger bottles are cheaper per unit.
The number of gels in this bottle (300) is somewhat misleading because a serving size is 5 gels (a little over 1100mg for the 5 gels). And by the way, this bottle is a 2 month supply (300/5 = 60 day's dosage). It might be difficult to take 5 gels per day, but this is great for people who don't want to take a full 1100+ mg per day or want to spread out the dosage over breakfast to dinner. I also like this one because it doesn't have a lot of extra vitamins in it. You can get more information from the Carlson Labs website.
Taste: This is the biggie for most people. I happen to like fish oil flavor and have always crushed the capsule in my mouth even as a kid. But some people can't stand it. This one has a "slightly lemon" flavor and I can attest it's true, but people who are really sensitive to taste should try a small bottle first.
To summarize, I got this for the reputation, price and the fact that it's safe/pure. I think all of the above is important, especially safety. Don't get an unknown cheap brand that has mercury and PCB's in it.
2 week update: After a couple of weeks of chewing this I've found that this is the cod liver oil I like best. The fish taste is very mild to me and I like chewing up the gel capsule; with the lemon taste it's almost like a jelly bean I'm chewing.

I have been battling severely dry skin, painful, cracked fingers/hands and eczema (elbows, feets, knees) for almost 2 years. A couple weeks ago, a friend told me about a lady from our community took Cod Liver Oil & it miraculously cleared up her skin problems (very similar to mine & after repeated Rx's from Dr's over several years). I know that Carlson's is a very reputable brand & ordered this CLO that day. I have been taking it for 10 days ago now (3am, 2noon, 3pm) & I am so thankful for this product. My skin is healing from the inside. The redness is almost gone. The sensitive, rough, scaly, dry areas are softening. I'm also putting the CLO on my skin topically & I'm very thankful for the lemon in it, as I don't smell like a fish! If you research CLO, you will find that it good for lots of different things....stomach problems, skin, high blood pressure, diabetes, immune system, inflammation, etc. I HIGHLY recommend this product to anyone with skin problems. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the results. To God be the Glory!!!!Read Best Reviews of Carlson Lightly Lemon Cod Liver Oil 1000 mg Here
When I started complaining about feeling "old" and talking about my aching joints and sore and swelling hands a friend suggested that I try Carlson's Cod Liver Oil. I was astonished when I experienced almost immediate relief. I have since recommended this Cod Liver Oil to others and they tell me they had the same results. At the end of the day it is great to realize that I haven't once thought about how sore and achy I used to feel.I take 5 of these every day and have noticed healthier skin, hair, nails, and also feel that I have more endurance when running.
