I have owned steamers that pump steam into a room but I've never had a steam inhaler such as this Gurin Steam Inhaler. Of course, the difference is that with this type of device, you are putting your nose/mouth directly into the path of escaping steam so the effect is much more pronounced and effective.

USE CAUTION: A caveat is that steam is HOT. If you do not use caution and particularly if children are going to be using this device, constant surveillance and care must be taken. You can get burned by the steam if you are not careful.

The user guide provided with this unit is so poorly written in broken English, it's nearly indecipherable. I hate that when a product from another country, in this case China, can't have a decently written user guide. No excuse for that.

The way this operates reminded me of an old Krups espresso machine that I used to own. They are similar in that you have to unscrew a cap, pour about 1 ounce of water into a boiler, replace the cap and then turn the unit on. The boiling water then escapes through a tiny orifice and is then routed out through the plastic mask. The neck of the mask assembly has a small amount of adjustment lengthwise but you cannot adjust the angle. Therefore you must position yourself properly or the unit could be difficult or uncomfortable to use. The unit is lightweight so you must also be careful not to put too much pressure downward when using the mask.

The rate of steam coming through the mask can be adjusted somewhat by a sliding piece on the top of the neck, just below the mask. This slide, moves a plastic piece in front of the orifice where the steam is escaping to partially block it thus reducing the amount of steam coming out. It's crude but effective.

Underneath the unit is a reservoir cup that is split into two sections. The right side is where you can put saline solution or aromatherapy. A plastic tube is then inserted into the liquid and the cup is put back into the machine. This gets injected into the steam automatically but there is no way to adjust the flow. The other side of the cup is a holding tank for condensing steam. The condensing steam is collected in this cup.

As far as I know, no part of this machine is dishwasher safe. You should hand wash the cup and mask.

The power cord has an inline switch to turn the unit on and off. When on, a power indicator light on the front of the unit below the reservoir cup goes on.

If the water runs dry when the unit is operating, a thermo-switch will turn the unit off for protection. However you should not rely on this as the way to turn the unit off, You should always turn the unit off from the switch once your 6-8 minute treatment is completed.

Never leave the unit operating unattended.

While not the highest quality in terms of materials or construction, this steam-inhaler works pretty well and is reasonably priced. I have used it numerous times and it has been helpful in relieving nasal congestion.

Works very well. Steam is a little too strong when you put your face too close. I really like the feature where you can put some eucalyptus oil and inhale!

This is an easy and very comfortable way to assist sinus congestion or combat allergies. Simply fill with water and allow the steam to cleanse for about 6 or 7 minutes and it will make a world of difference.

I mix with eucalyptus essential oil for stronger benefits: it is known for cleaning sinuses and for supporting cold relief. Of course you can combine it with any essential oil for whatever benefit you desire (calming, etc.)

Easy to operate, simply fill with water and steam, it clears up clogged sinuses easily. I was able to try out this product for feedback via an honest, unbiased, impartial review.

I had never used a personal steam inhaler before but my husband had and he recommended one for our son, age 6, whom when he gets congested cannot get to sleep for just coughing and coughing. I give him children's cough and cold medicine but honestly that only works somewhat. Children have a harder time blowing their little noses and therefore get more of that congestion down in their lungs than adults do. It's just really hard to sleep like that.

My son came down with another one of those colds and it was the perfect time to try our new steam inhaler out.

The steam inhaler comes with a measuring cup and you remove the top of the inhaler and pour the measured water in there. There is also an additional reservoir at the bottom of the appliance and you can place a saline solution in there or essential oils such as eucalyptus to make your own version of vapor rub.

We made a solution of sea salt and water up and put down into the reservoir. You plug the machine up and turn it on. It immediately within seconds started pumping out steam. I had my son stand over the face mask and breathe the steam in. It runs for about 6 8 minutes and then runs out of water so the steam stops coming out. It lasts about the perfect length of time for a helpful session.

At first my son didn't want to do it, he said it was hot and made him sweaty but he laid down to sleep and did not cough one more time. This was after he had been trying to sleep and kept coughing for 2 hours.

The next morning, my son said "Mommy, that thing you made me use last night worked, I didn't cough no more." Priceless!
