Bottom Line: Fish Oil really works to prevent artery disease, namely heart disease and strokes. It's not a bogus health food thing, it really works.

You need the EPA and the DHA from the fish. The other omega-3's, 6's etc. aren't the same. Skip the flaxseed, etc. You want enough EPA and DHA, you don't wanna be grossed out by the taste or get a fishy "repeat", and you don't wanna drink a bunch of unnecessary fat.

This stuff is good because: it has the right concentration of EPA/DHA: 1.3 g/teasp, which is high. And it tastes good. Even Nordic Naturals, a very respected company, has a similar EPA/DHA level, but tastes nasty.

Remember these supplements aren't regulated. Go to consumerlabs.com, they test the supplements. This wasn't tested, but Carlson capsules and cod liver oil were tested and passed, so i assume and hope this passes also.

That's all you need to know. If you're 30 or older, and you have high blood pressure and cholesterol like everyone else, take in at least 2 grams of EPA/DHA a day, your arteries will stay clean.

I just wanted to share my experience with Carlson Fish Oil. I have an 11 year old son with Autism. My son's autism was severe, a 9/10 score. He has frequent, violent self injury to his head where would bang his head on the wall or with his fists, several times a day. He had to wear extremely high noise reducing shooting earmuffs so that he could go outside so that noises wouldn't trigger a full meltdown. Not to mention the almost complete lack of social interaction. Before taking Carlson, he was capable of speech, but only would do so if asked a question and prompted multiple times. He never really initiated a conversation.

I started him on this 9 months ago and actually gave him 1 teaspoon once a day at the start, then gradually increased it to 1 tablespoon 2 times a day after about 2 months. The difference has been dramatic.

1. He only wears headphones rarely. Noises do not trigger meltdowns as they used to.

2. He sits down with us in the family room and tells us about the movie he is watching on his IPAD.

3. He plays with his little sister now briefly everyday. He could not be in the same room with her before.

4. His self talk has increased though.

5. He initiates spontaneous brief conversations.

6. His self injury has been reduced dramatically. He only had 2 self injury incidents last month. Down from several times a day.

7. His eye contact has improved as well.

8. Stimming is still present.

So clearly at least for my son, it has improved his socialization and self injury. He still has Autism, but his quality of life has improved. We are even going on a trip now, which was unthinkable before. I seriously hope that they continue to manufacture this product. I highly recommend it.

*****UPDATE January 30, 2013*****

Almost a year after starting my son on Carlson Omega 3, I have noticed improvements aside from the previous ones I had already mentioned.

1. He does not wear headphones anymore. Not at all.

2. For the past 3 days, every time he wakes up, he walks to me and says "Good morning Daddy". No prompting at all. Completely spontaneous. That always brings me to tears.

3. He actually argues with me in the morning about being too lazy to go to school, just like a normal kid. He used to just meltdown and bang on his head in the morning when he knows he has to go to school. He now calmly says "Can I stay home? I feel sleepy."

It is almost as if the fog is starting to lift with him. I will keep noting changes to his behavior. Hopefully, this is permanent and continuous. I can only hope.

*****UPDATE April 22, 2013*****

It is nice to read back on my previous postings and see how far he has improved since the last time I wrote. This is where he is now:

1. He has not had a self injury episode in 45 days!!! No more banging his head with his fists or the wall when he gets frustrated. He now says, "This is frustrating, daddy can you fix it please?"

2. He now has his own room. He still needs to do more to clean up his room though. But the fact that we do not need to watch him all the time anymore is a huge relief for us.

3. He takes a bath with very minimal prompting. No more than a typical 12 year old that is too lazy to take a bath I would assume.

4. He does not hide in a quiet room anymore the whole day. He now spends most of the day sitting with us in the living room watching TV or playing the Wii. He still likes to have some quiet time in his room, but then again, who doesn't?

5. He still talks to himself a lot(scripting), but this time he has learned to whisper most of the time so it does not look out of place as much when we are in public. People used to walk away in fear because he would say things out loud, usually something he watched on TV or Youtube.

6. His stimming is still there, but he is actually more self conscious. When we are outside, I tell him to hold back on his stimming till he gets in the car or when we get home. He has no problem with that. He tries to control himself when we are out, and then he stims to his heart's content when we get home. He is happy with this setup.

7. He has only missed about 2 to 3 days a month of school. He was really ill. Before he would just not go at all and would meltdown if we forced him.

8. The biggest change is his socialization. We rode the Gondola in the Venetian in Vegas, he looked square into the Gondolier's face and requested "Can you please sing something from Sesame Street?" Unfortunately, our Gondolier was really from Italy and she just moved to the US, so she has not been exposed to the english version of Sesame Street. So she asked him " I don't know any songs, can you sing something from Sesame Street, and I will sing with you." To my shock, he started to sing "Rubber ducky your the one, you make bath time lots of fun..." And then we all sang along with him. That was the best time we ever had as a family.

I have conversations with him now. Before I could only ask him one thing before he would ask me to leave. Now, we can actually discuss his health, exercise, food and games. Not for very long, but It is amazing.

Again, though he still has Autism. But slowly he is improving and we are excited to see where he will be in another 4 months. I will keep updating this so you can track his progress.

*******UPDATE June 7, 2013********

I just wanted to update something amazing yesterday. We went Bowling! To most people, the sounds in the Bowling alley are not an issue. I asked him 2 years ago how a Bowling alley sounds to him. He said the word "Explosions". To him, a Bowing alley sounded like a war zone. Needless to say, we never were able to get him back in there until yesterday because of the traumatic experience.

He had so much fun Bowling. When I asked him if the ball I got him was too heavy, he said "The ball is too heavy, can I use a lighter ball?". We was very chatty and we even had dinner in the Bowling alley. For those who live in SOCAL, go to La Habra 300 Bowl. They are used to catering to special needs kids. They even have a ball ramp so that special needs kids can just put the ball on the ramp, and it will roll down and hit the pins. They love it. But he did not use that yesterday. He actually was able to bowl with 2 hands at first, then one-handed when he saw others bowling one-handed.

He then walked up to me last night and said "Thank you for taking me bowling today, Daddy. I had fun." He then went to bed, and I was in tears.

High quality fish oil. Because it's not in pill form you're forced to notice if it's rancid. Very cost effective too.

There's a lot of misconception out there regarding heart disease. Heart disease is primarily caused by oxidized LDL. You get oxidized LDL when your diet is low in stable medium chain triglycerides, and high in PUFA (poly unsaturated fatty acids, like omega3 and omega6). What's worse is when the PUFA is primarily omega 6, which causes inflammation in the body to increase and LDL to become small/dense which is more likely to oxidize.

You could have low total LDL, but have high oxLDL and still get heart disease. Conversely, you could have high total LDL but have low oxLDL and live to be 100. The cholesterol hypothesis is based on the work of Ancel Keys's 7 countries study in which he correlated *all* fat with heart disease in 7 countries. That's really it. And there were actually way more countries, but it didn't fit Keys's theory so he dropped him. No true scientist does this. For example, France and Nordic countries have low heart disease, but high fat intake (including saturated). Chile has low fat but high rates of heart disease.

Getting to a 1:1 omega 3 to omega 6 ratio is key to reducing inflammation and preventing chronic diseases. But too much PUFA including omega3 is also bad. I would recommend reducing your omega 6 intake (industrialized seed oils, vegetable oils) and supplement about a tablespoon of this stuff daily. Get your fats from medium chain triglycerides (cream, coconuts, lard). This is in conflict with public dietary advice, but not with the science.

To those trying to lower triglycerides, lower your fructose intake and improve insulin sensitivity through exercise. Fish oil isn't going to cure the effects of 36 oz soda/day.

Fish oil capsules cause me to have fish oil after-burps (yuck!), which make me avoid taking fish oil at all. I prefer Carlson's fish oil, but only because I learned the trick of how to swallow a teaspoon of it without gagging.

Have a glass of water or juice handy. Measure out your teaspoon of oil in a tablespoon sized spoon, so you have less chance of spilling it. Take the teaspoon of fish oil in to your mouth, let it gather under your tongue, but do not swallow it until you take your glass of water and wash it down. I take the fish oil before I eat breakfast. No fish burps later. You can do it. It is worth it.

The lemon flavor only partially masks the fishiness of the oil, but it is better than pure fish smell. I think Carlson's fish oil is an excellent product, pure and fresh.

This stuff is so good that I use it to make an absolutely delicious lemon vinaigrette for salads. I use half olive oil, half lemon fish oil, and fresh squeezed lemon juice (instead of vinegar). Other seasonings I like to add are dijon mustard, garlic, ginger, black pepper, and sea salt. This is the main way I take my fish oil as a salad dressing! Their lemon flavored cod liver oil is excellent, too. I use it in the winter for extra vitamin D.
