After reading several reviews about how certain scents do not last, I wanted to write a review to share a bit about my own experience. The diffuser works well, but the longevity of the fragrance has quite a bit to do with the oil one chooses. For example, more "volatile" (i.e. quickly evaporating)oils such as citrus will dissipate rapidly, whereas more stable, resinous oils like patchouli or myrrh will last much longer between reapplications to the scent pad. The addition of a heating element--the diffuser-only hastens the evaporation process, particularly when using a natural Essential Oil. Synthetic fragrance oils will last longer as well, but I prefer not to breathe an oil whose chemical makeup is unknown to me. I do some blending of the oils, following perfumery principles (top note, middle note, base note) and have created some very pleasant blends that are more lasting. A favorite is grapefruit, lavender, and vanilla. I mix equal parts of each and then put about 8-10 drops of the blend on the diffuser pad. It does need to be refreshed every few days, but I actually enjoy that since if I want to change scents I don't have to worry about the old one lingering.

The heated plate (where you put the pad with the fragrance/essential oil) is small, so of course the amount of scent that can come out of it strictly depends on how concentrate the fragrance that you add is. In general, essential oils work much better than fragrance oils because they are much stronger.

Very little smell and what we did smell lasted a very short time. Waste of good Doterra oils on this item. I had better luck with some cotton balls in a zip lock bag and just open it from time to time in the car. That works for weeks! Would have sent this back if my husband hadn't thrown the box away so quick.

I have people in and out of my car all the time...and everyone comments on how good it smells. I have been using geranium and it is just enough with about 5-6 drops and lasts a couple of days.
