I expected this to be a mass-made bisque piece and would still have loved it but found it just lovely that it was handmade...having majored in art the hole at the top gives it away as that's how it was fired. Also it's "high fired" which means fired at a temperature to make it stoneware...in other words, basically "petrified" ceramic ware making it stand up to heat better and have less likelihood of breakage.

It is dipped in a pretty neutral-toned glaze.

So what do you do with it? Throw out the candles that leave soot and the chemical-filled room fresheners.

Buy a box of essential oils. I personally love peppermint, lavender and sweet orange. Peppermint will keep pests out of your house including ants naturally and just smells wonderfully good. Lavender is very soothing and orange is sweet and great if you have a litterbox in any room--it masks pet odors.

Fill the top part with water and then put a few drops of essential oil of your choice in the water. Just to your taste. 6 will waft through the whole house.

Light a tea candle (a tea candle is no taller than the base of the diffuser)

and that will heat up the ceramic piece and cause the essential oils to fill up your house far better than any candle or airfreshener EVER could!

What I like about this diffuser is that it is pretty sitting out even if you don't have it lit...it's a handsome homemade piece. This is also why it would make a great gift with a few essential oils and look far more expensive than it is.

It also holds more water than many diffusers and because it has a bit of a "top" as it's like a ceramic bag hanging, it just seems to hold the water in longer without evaporation even after you blow out the candle

But better yet, I've seen some glass diffusers heat up too hot and break. A high fired ceramic piece won't allow that to happen.

Negatives: I wish it had come with a tea candle. I didn't have one on hand when I got this piece and I would have loved to have lit it up from the start. But I guess that's like some items come with batteries and some don't...with this you won't even get a "starter battery".

Very nice and good looking piece...surprising for the price. I love it!

This folk art porcelain tear drop oil warmer/diffuser is a very simple design, and is pleasing to the eye, as it is quite neutral; it fits pretty much everywhere. When I ordered it I was a bit worried that I might receive it in pieces or the metal hook bent, but everything arrived just fine. What I really like about this warmer is that the tear drop is rather large, accomodating a large amount of scented oil, as well as water (to prevent burning). One tea candle burns for approximately two hours, and in other oil warmers a refill would be necessary after this time. Not in this oil warmer all you need is another candle, and you have yourself another two hours of great smells. I find the shallow dish oil warmers annoying as they have to be refilled very often, and monitored as well this warmer is very low maintenance. Add that to the low price, and you have a winner!

I picked this product because of the good reviews it had gotten so far, and because of the price. I've had it for a few months now, have used it a handful of times, and I'm very happy with it.

The porcelain tear drop seems to be of very high quality, and holds a good amount of water inside for you to drop your essential oils into. The base and hook look good, but are kind of flimsy and light. It gets the job done, though. It seems like the black base would dent easily if you weren't carful, but this isn't a item that gets handled too often, so I'm not too worried about it.

My tea light candles from the dollar store fit perfectly into the hole, and the candle flame seems to be a good distance away from the bottom of the tear drop.

I use about 5-10 drops of essential oils each time, and the smell fills my bathroom and hallway, and even a bit into my living room. I imagine if I used more oil then the smell would go farther.

I gave this 4 out of 5 starts because of the flimsy feeling base, but the product functions well, and looks good. I would definitely purchase it again if I had it to over.

I bought this item after perusing the rest of Amazon's candle diffusers; I thought this one was the most attractive, it had good reviews, and the price was incredibly reasonable. However, after trying unsuccessfully over 2 days to get any kind of noticeable diffusion of my oils, I returned this item. I used therapeutic grade essential oils during my attempts to get this thing to work properly.

During my first attempt, this item was right out of the box as it came shipped. I used a tea candle variety that I have previously used w/ other diffusers. The pot on the diffuser just did not get hot enough to heat the water/oil mixture inside. I placed my finger on the bottom of the pot after about 30 minutes and it was only slightly hot to the touch, the water inside was nowhere near hot enough for effective diffusion.

During my second attempt, I though I would give this thing all the advantages I could. I lowered the pot using a bit of wire, so it was only about 2 inches from the flame and used very hot water in my oil mix. After about 10 minutes I noticed that there were noticeable puffs of steam coming out of the diffuser, accompanied by a nice lavender aroma from the oil. However, this only lasted about 5 minutes and then stopped; I attribute this to the fact that the candle I used was brand new and for the first 15 minutes or so, you usually get a higher flame than when it burns down a little. I thought that maybe w/ a higher quality candle I would get better diffusion.

During my third attempt, I used a higher quality candle and decreased the amount of water in the pot by about half. This attempt was much like the second; about 5 minutes of good diffusion while the candle was brand new, followed by a cooling of the pot and minimal to no diffusion.

This product failed to work for me. Even w/ the modifications I made (lowering the pot w/ wire), which I should not have to do, it did not effectively diffuse my oils. Perhaps other reviewers were using different oils that require lower temperatures, I don't know. I did not find this product to be an effective means of diffusing my essential oils.

Additionally, as other reviewers have noted, the construction on this item's base is not of the highest quality. The pot is attractive and seems sturdy, the same can be said for the arm. However, the item's base is extremely light-weight metal that will not tolerate any kind of abuse or torque. Furthermore, the spot-weld that holds the arm to the base is very light-weight and seems like it would snap w/ any kind of rough handling.

EDIT: Someone suggested to me that the common denominator across my tests w/ this item was my oils, and that they might have been the issue. However, I can definitively say that my oils are NOT the issue. After returning this item, I bought a plain terra cotta tea light diffuser and have been using it for several days w/ wonderful results. My living room now reeks of lavender essential oil.

i bought 2, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. the one upstairs is perfect and i love it. the one downstairs had a flaw inside the bowl and a big chunk of ceramic and glaze that stuck out from the inside wall of the bowl broke off (i assume from the heat) and exposed raw ceramic (the inside of the bowl wasn't properly smoothed out before firing and glazing so its a manufacturing flaw). So now the bowl doesn't burn my oils properly (it leaves a large pool of foul smelling unburned oil-its such a waste of oil) and since the inside has unglazed ceramic exposed it soaks up oil and if i use a different scented oil it makes a disgusting smell (i can only use it for a short amount of time before the foul smell takes over). and before you roll your eyes and say its my fault for not cleaning it properly it worked perfectly before the shard broke off the inside wall and i clean it thoroughly after each use. i have not thrown it out yet because its so new and i didn't complain to the seller since i wasn't sure if he/she could really do anything about it. but i am close to getting rid of it because it simply wastes my pricey oils. i'm really bummed but i don't want to shell out more $$ to get another one and chance that it has a flaw as well. the factory creating these things needs to have better quality control...

i'm pretty sure i will eventually buy another one and probably from the same seller but right now i just don't feel like it since i'm still a bit peeved. i have just stopped using it and it is now collecting dust on the counter.

Though on a positive note they are very cute and have a small footprint and make really great burners when they don't have flaws.
