"Meets the American Heart Association's recommendation of 2-4 grams of EPA/DHA daily."
Unless you plan to take 4 to 8 of these pills every day, they do NOT meet the AHA's recommendation of 2-4 g/day. The labeling indicates that *TWO* (2) soft gels gives you 783 mg of EPA and 400 mg of DHA, so a little more than 1 g total EPA/DHA per two soft gels. To get 2 grams of EPA/DHA, you'd have to consume FOUR soft gels every day and so this bottle would last you exactly two weeks until you have to buy another one. To get 4 g total EPA/DHA, you'd have to consume EIGHT soft gels per day, meaning you'd run out of pills in a week.
I have read numerous studies and the AHA is correct in their recommendation. Studies have found that the minimum therapeutic dose of EPA/DHA is 3g/day, with some studies using as much as 5g/day. I have yet to find ANY pill/gel-form fish oil supplement that even comes close. Now Foods Ultra Omega 3, Fish Oil Soft-gels, 180-Count is the best I've found, with a total of 750 mg EPA/DHA per ONE gel cap. That still means you'd have to take 4 soft gels per day just to get 3g, or 3 soft gels per day to get a little over 2 g EPA/DHA. That is more reasonable and the NOW Foods Ultra Omega 3 makes it a bit more affordable since you get 180 gel caps for about $22, but it's still a lot to consume on a regular basis and we're talking horse pills here.
Many other fish oil brands are totally misleading and provide absolutely no DHA or EPA, instead relying on ALA and Linseed Oil, among many other oils that have been shown to have no effect compared with DHA and EPA.
I have found that some of the liquid fish oil supplement that you take with a tablespoon (from a bottle) *DO* offer the 3-4 g/day, but I'm not sure I'm prepared to consume fish oil so directly and have to drink it. Fishy burps from soft gels are bad enough. Twinlab Emulsified Norwegian Cod Liver Oil, Lemon, 12 Ounce (Pack of 2) provides a little over 3g of EPA/DHA per 2 TBSP (CAUTION: the orange flavor and some of the other ones contain much less). Right now you can get 24 oz. of the Twinlab Cod Liver Oil for $20, which amounts to 24 servings if you want 3g of EPA/DHA per day, so it would last you about 3 weeks. I've compared them with the NOW gel caps below:
NOW Soft Gels ($22 for 180 capsules): 3g/day EPA/DHA = 4 pills per day = 45 days (1 1/2 months)
Twinlab Cod Liver Oil ($20 for 24 oz): 3g/day EPA/DHA = 2 TBSP per day = 24 days (3 weeks)
The soft gels are more affordable, if you want to swallow huge gel capsules several times a day. The Cod Liver Oil might be easier to swallow depending on how fishy it tastes. I haven't tried it, so I don't know how it tastes. I read some of the NOW comments and some users indicated the capsules leave a mild fishy burp, but maybe not as bad as some other capsules.
If anyone comes across a cheaper alternative, whether in liquid or gel cap form (latter is preferable!) please comment to let me know!I've tried a lot of fish oil pills and they all have a fishy odor or cause fish burps.... not these. You can't even smell fish when you put your nose in the bottle. On top of that I really notice the difference in mental clarity. I will definitely take these as long as Barlean's continues to make them.Don't be fooled by others. This is the real deal. 5 years and going I will never (hopefully) need any other Brand. Barlean's is the best.I have noticed a good change to my health since taking these pills. Running performance is better. No fish taste whatsoever. These are fairly large capsules but I do not have any trouble swallowing them. After taking it, I rarely experience it "coming up" again in burps, etc. My stomach is fairly sensitive and I have no trouble whatsoever with taking it. I bought it mainly because EPA is particularly good for the skin. While I have not noticed any changes in my skin, I do find this to be a good product and will buy it again after I run out.
