I switched after yet another problem with Woolite, so for those of you wondering what the difference is between this and Woolite (other than price): Sweaters haven't shrunk or faded with this, while they did sometimes with Woolite. This also smells better and makes your sweaters softer (something about Woolite being too alkeline and stripping away the lanolin if I'm remembering my chemistry correctly). And it's better for the environment and all that jazz.

Due to my history of sweater destruction, I was initially unwilling to take any chances washing a $200 cashmere sweater myself, despite all the good reviews. So I worked my way up to the cashmere. After a few wool sweaters and some socks, I finally washed my favorite sweater and it turned out great. Better than the cleaners, actually, because it was soft and not awkwardly stiff.

Since falling in love with Laundress products (I now have their delicates wash and stain remover, too), I've found myself gushing to friends only to get mocked for spending so much on detergent. So, for those of you on the fence, this is what I told my friends:

-Price: It's cheap if you think of it as a dry cleaning alternative (it's even cheaper than that Dry Cleaner's Secret stuff, which doesn't even work that well). Plus it lasts forever.

-Quality: For those worried that "green" laundry detergent = less effective + more expensive, don't. The people at the Laundress apparently really know fabrics and laundry, in addition to the environment.

-Scent: Nope it doesn't smell like Downy or a cool ocean breeze on a sunny summer's day or whatever you'd think of as "laundry detergent smell." But I like that. The cedar scent is functional (moths), not overpowering, and once your item has dried, it's barely detectable. It's not cedary in a chemical or sawdust smell kind of way, more like warm wood notes. It smells like winter? Though, if you hand wash, your bathroom will smell like a cedar closet for an hour or two afterwards.

This is a truly great product. I have had a couple of wool sweaters come back from the dry cleaner rough and stiff, albeit clean. It is really true that the cleaning solution removes the natural oils that keep your wool soft. When I needed to clean a cashmere sweater, I purchased The Laundress Cashmere Shampoo. My sweater came out clean, soft and smelling wonderful (if you like the scent of cedar). You do have to have patience to swish your sweater in a tub, rinse and wrap in a towel, then lay flat. You will be rewarded a thousand times over, though. My sweaters actually seemed to be in better condition than when they went into the tub. If you have a sweater you love, or one that is expensive, use this!

I purchased this product after it was recommended on Ideal Bite. This stuff is fabulous. I've washed 15 cashmere and wool sweaters and have barely made a dent in the bottle. (I have a "he" washer and only need to use half the usual amount.) I also add Downy to the rinse cycle, so my sweaters smell ever so much better than they ever did after a trip to the dry cleaner. The soap itself has a very mild, pleasant smell. My sweaters are actually softer than they were before, too. Rather than dry flat, I use a "hanging garment drying rack" also purchased at Amazon. Really, this is so much cheaper than dry cleaning and the results are so much better. And it's better for the environment than all those nasty chemicals.

Tried it on my off white cashmere sweater and it worked great. Left it soft and clean. Better than the dry cleaners.

The Laundress's Wool and Cashmere Shampoo is just all around great. I first tried the product on a grey and black striped sweater, that, if ruined, I wouldn't have been too upset. I filled my kitchen sink up with cool water, added some detergent, swished around to dissolve, then added the sweater (inside out). I swished the sweater around for a couple minutes, paying attention to the edges and underarm area, then left overnight to soak. The next day, I pressed the water out and rinsed until the water ran clear (also cool water). I let air dry on a sweater rack. Let me tell you, the sweater looks and FEELS amazing (no dry cleaner stiffness) and, though the shampoo is cedar-scented, once your garment is dry, you can hardly detect it. The black stripes didn't fade at all, and the colors did not bleed into each other. Based on this result, I've washed angora, merino wool, and cashmere/wool blends all with excellent results. And it doesn't take that long to hand wash! Just let the overnight soak do the work for you. This is truly a great product, and I would recommend to anyone who wants an all natural, easy, and efficient way to clean their wool and cashmere sweaters (and angora it worked great on angora).
